Total Productive Maintenance

What is Total Productive Maintenance?

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is an approach to increase equipment reliability, reduce costs and improve quality. The main goals of implementing TPM are zero breakdowns and zero defects. Companies that achieve excellence in reliability are able to maximize equipment availability and optimize production levels. Operating costs will drop significantly, because equipment failures are less frequent and workers’ productivity rises. Product quality improves because stabilized production eliminates the variability caused by frequent shutdowns and restarts.

The word "total" has three meanings which together describe the principle features of TPM:

  • Total effectiveness implies TPM's pursuit of economic efficiency or profitability.
  • Total maintenance puts focus on corrective, preventive, as well as predictive maintenance.
  • Total participation of all employees includes autonomous maintenance by operators through small group activities.

TPM is a critical assistant to Lean Manufacturing. If machine uptime is not predictable and equipment reliability not guaranteed, extra stocks must be kept to buffer against these uncertainties, otherwise the flow through the process will be interrupted.

How does Stanwick support you in implementing TPM?

  • Executing a maintenance assessment to identify the current level of equipment reliability and to evaluate the effectiveness of the current maintenance strategy.
  • Identifying improvement potential in equipment uptime and equipment reliability.
  • Setting up an implementation plan together with local management to implement the desired maintenance strategy and incorporating the necessary TPM elements to achieve long term improvement in equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Providing in-house TPM training sessions.
  • Organizing, monitoring and reporting progress of the TPM implementation to management.
